Short Homage to Catalonia

Once again CinemaAttic is pioneer bringing initiatives as an alternative source of entertainment in UK cities like Edinburgh. The strong cultural and political heritage of Catalonia will be hitting the screen on September 30th. This is a unique opportunity to approach the most significant proposals of a truly vibrant culture.
On this occasion, we will present the best of contemporary Catalan cinema because we believe the platforms responsible for it (Acadèmia, TV3, and distribution companies such as Marvin&Wayne, filmmaking schools such as ESCAC…) are doing things in simple and wise fashion, facilitating the legion possibilities of their new -and of course the established- filmmakers to flourish.
All of the selected works have captivated international audiences in the world’s most prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Toronto or Cleremond-Ferrand, and have harvested awards at Goya ceremony, Premis Gaudi or BAFTA. Now they arrive for the first time in Edinburgh. Strictly the best to understand the excellent state of Catalan film industry.

The programme will look at LGBT and youth complexities with Victor XX, social deprivation and labour hardship with The Runner or The Goodbye. We will raise questions on migration while keeping a space for love, fear and loneliness. Embracing cultures, the short film programme will take us from a factory in Hangzhou to the rural fields of Gerona. All these landscapes and concerns will merge filtered through the eyes of Catalan filmmakers in a selection of films in English, Chinese, Spanish and Catalan.
Because this is a celebration of Catalan filmmakers’ genius, this party would make more sense if having some of those maestros here with us on such a special night. World-acclaimed stop motion specialists Anna Solanas and Marc Riba have been disturbing and moving audiences with their puppets over the last ten years. Marc Riba will be with us in Edinburgh to talk on Catalan culture, animated movies and short film industry developments.
Marc will give a Stop Motion Masterclass at Edinburgh College of Art, further information about this Free ticketed event via this link
